Marine Corps Reserve Lance Corporal Shane Keegan O'Donnell, 24, Deforest, Wisconsin, died on Monday, November 8, 2004, in Lutifiyah, Babil Province, Iraq. The area is south of Baghdad and Fallujah. He was killed during combat with enemy forces. Lance Corporal O'Donnell was assigned to Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve, out of Madison, Wisconsin.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel notes that O'Donnell was one of two members of the battalion's Madison-based Golf Company that were killed in the combat. Lance Corporal Brandon Ramey, 22, of Belvidere, Illinois also died in the combat operations. The 2nd Battalion is an Illinois-based unit of about 900 Marines and was activated in early June of 2004. The unit arrived in Iraq in late September of 2004. About 175 Marines from Golf Company rifle unit were deployed to Iraq.
The Journal Sentinel went on to say that Shane O'Donnell played football at De Forest High School. De Forest is a community of around 8,000 people just north of Madison. O'Donnell was not married. He worked construction in civilian life. He had joined the Madison unit in October of 2002. He had attended Madison Area Technical College.
The Web site militarytimes.com posted information from the Associated Press that says O'Donnell was remembered as an upbeat, happy-go-lucky guy. He had been in choir all four years of high school.
The Web site iraq.pigstye.net notes O'Donnell graduated from high school in 1999. Besides football, and choir, he also played on the baseball team.
A feature article on the Web blog jenniferfetterly.info notes Shane O'Donnell was a De Forest native and graduated with honors. He was working as a plumber after graduating from Madison Area Technical College in 2004. The blog indicates that besides O'Donnell and Ramey, Marine Corporal Robert Warns II was a third Marine from the unit killed that day. Nine months later, Marine Staff Sergeant Chad Simon passed away from the wounds he sustained in the same explosion. Marine Lance Corporal Scott Kruchten was seriously wounded in the same combat.
At the time of his death Marine Lance Corporal Shane O'Donnell was survived by his father and stepmother, Larry and Diana O'Donnell; his mother Peg O'Donnell; and, his younger brother Eric.
