Army Reserve Staff Sergeant Charles A. Kiser - Wisconsin Military Casualty Compilation - Afghanistan/Iraq

Army Reserve Staff Sergeant Charles Anthony Kiser, 37, Cleveland, Wisconsin, died on Thursday, June 24, 2004, in Mosul, Iraq. According to CNN.com, Staff Sergeant Kiser was guarding the Mosul Interim Police Academy in Mosul, Iraq, when insurgents attacked. Kiser was on the building's roof when a suicide truck bomber drove in the main entrance. Kisser and Staff Sergeant Stephen Martin opened fire on the truck, killing the driver, but not before the driver detonated the explosives underneath them, killing Kiser and wounding Martin, who died of his injuries on July 1, 2004. Staff Sergeant Kiser was assigned to the Army Reserve’s 330th Military Police Detachment, out of Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
Charles was originally from the Cincinnati, Ohio area but had been living in Cleveland, Wisconsin. He had been in Iraq since January of 2004. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel mentioned Charles had also spent active duty time in the Navy. They also noted Kiser was remembered in Ohio as a champion high school sprinter.
The Web site militarytimes.com using information from the Associated Press notes Charles Kiser grew up in Amelia, Ohio, about 15 miles east of Cincinnati, He was a sprinter and ran cross country at McNicholas High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he graduated in 1985. He was a member of the track team at the University of Cincinnati, but left college after a year and joined the Navy. After seven years of active duty and seven years in the Navy Reserve, Kiser joined an Army Reserve unit two years before his death. He had met his wife Debbie while serving in the Navy. They settled in her home state of Wisconsin in the tiny community of Cleveland, a village of 1,400 about 70 miles north of Milwaukee along Lake Michigan. The Army Reserve unit center was near their home. Before being deployed, he worked as a supervisor for a Manitowoc firm that manufactures automotive parts. Kiser left for Iraq after training at Fort McCoy in western Wisconsin for over a month.
The Web site honoredmps.org using information from The Cincinnati Enquirer, notes that family friends of "Chuck" Kiser said he had re-enlisted in the Army Reserve while in Iraq. Acquaintances also mentioned Charles had coached a championship Little League baseball team in 2003 and volunteered to work with youth at Zion United Church of Christ in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
An obituary posted on the Web site findagrave.com notes Charles Kiser was born on October 24, 1966, in Cincinnati, Ohio. While serving for three years in Sigonella, Sicily as a Navy SEABEE, he met his wife-to-be, Debra Theel, who was also serving in the U.S. Navy. They married in August of 1989. In 1994, Chuck and Deb completed their active Navy service duty and moved to Wisconsin. Charles joined the Navy Reserve unit out of Green Bay, Wisconsin. He then joined U.S. Army Military Police unit in Sheboygan in 2001.
At the time of his death Army Reserve Staff Sergeant Charles Anthony Kiser was survived by his wife Debbie; his son Mark; his daughter Alicia; his mother Glenda; and, five sisters Chris, Denise, Patty, Teresa, and Joy. His father Charles died in 2002.
