VFW post 2312 - Monroe - Friday Night Fish Fry
This entry was posted on 11/25/2011 1:30 AM and is filed under Friday Night Fish Fry.
I popped into the Monroe VFW back in 2008 during the city's biannual Cheese Day's event. The VFW is located down by Monroe's tavern district on the near south side of town. The area is a well kept secret to locals. You can walk to four adjacent taverns in one outing. Anyway, I had a couple of adult beverages back then and moved on. I put them on my fish fry to-do list. Now over three years later we finally made the pilgrimage back try the fish.
On my first visit as it was during the day on a Sunday, I did not notice the dining area off to the side of the barroom. This Friday in question, there was a good amount of tables occupied. Like many VFW posts, the building is older, and the furnishings humble. But, the atmosphere is comfortable.
We started out with a basket of white bread with real butter. Heide tried their combination offering of fried Shrimp, fried Cod, and butterfried Scallops. She chose hashbrowns as her side. Bear in mind the Germans and the Swiss over in Green County fix up their hashbrowns way beyond run of the mill cafe hashbrowns.
For my part I often feel incumbent to try the fried Cod. It was cut in Haddock-esque chunks. For my side I opted for a basket of tasty onion rings.
They also offer a humble salad bar. The presentation is complete with dressings in plastic squeeze bottles - a sign of the good tavern fish fry. The macaroni salad was above par on this night; there was also diced cole slaw and traditional potato salad. The whipped salad with apple and caramel was also worth a second helping.
I topped off my dinner with a good Monroe area Berghoff beer. Heide had a regular Coca-cola.
For this particular fish fry construct there is a short time window as they serve from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 pm. So if you are a laid back Friday night person heading out late, you might need to pick up the pace on this one.
Monroe VFW 2312 is cool with cool Dadio. Find them down on 17th Street, in Monroe, Wisconsin. Call (608) 325-3338 for more information.
Note: You can find a chronological list at the Cool Dadio Media Fish Fry Page of these fish frys as we have visited them. The list presents the most recently visited fish fry at the top, in lieu of alphabetical order.
Wisconsin Military Service Person Special Mention of the Week (each week Cooldadiomedia mentions a Wisconsin service person killed in Iraq or Afghanistan)
Army Sergeant Lindsey Thomas James, 23, Ubana, Missouri (family connections in Mountain, Wisconsin) was killed on Saturday, January 29, 2005 in Baghdad, Iraq. His foot patrol was attacked by insurgents using an improvised explosive device. Sergeant James was attached to Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), out of Fort Drum, New York. The Missouri legislature's House Resolution Number 416 notes that Lindsey James was born in California. He graduated from Skyline High School in the Urbana, Missouri area in 2001. The Resolution goes on to note Sergeant James joined the Army in 2002 and was on his second tour of duty in Iraq when he was killed. Information posted on the Web site legacy.com mentions Lindsey James worked as a welder in Texas for several months before entering the military. He was remembered by his family as "a fun-loving guy." His older brother had also served in the military. Lindsey had been married only two months at the time of his death. The Wisconsin Department of Veteran Affairs notes that the couple had lived in Mountain, Wisconsin, for a time, in the far northeast of the state. At the time of his death Sergeant Lindsey James was survived by his wife Jasara James; parents Larry and Margaret James, and Sandra McFarland; six siblings Adam, Tammy, Jason, Clinton, Angela, and Toby; and, grandmothers Marjorie James, Hazel Phfinster, and Betty Jones. Army Sergeant Lindsey James is the 98th military service person that has been identified by Cool Dadio Media as having Wisconsin connections and that has died in Iraq since the Spring of 2003.
