Tully's II Food & Spirits - Monona - Friday Night Fish Fry

This entry was posted on 11/4/2011 1:30 AM and is filed under Friday Night Fish Fry.

Mother-in-law and I hoped the Van Galder bus to Madison to meet up with Heide for fish fry. It was a beautiful fall night.  Heide picked us up at the Dutch Mill park-and-ride-bus-stop place off the Belt-line.  And off the Immaculate Heart School we went to partake in their version of fish fry.

Well what's that old saying? "The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry."  I checked the church in Monona's fish fry schedule four times and I still missed the nuance that their first one of the season would be on a Saturday.  Long story short, the parking lot was empty on Friday night.

Heide said, "Hey, hey what about Tully's down by the Belt-line?"  So..., Tully's got the nod.  We'll try the church next time.

Tully's II Food & Spirits used to be the old Leske's Supper Club. The change came about 10 years ago.  We ate there once, it must have been, oh say back in the mid-1990s.  That was a chunk of time ago.  Nowadays, the place has had a face lift.  It has the timbre of the neo consummate sports bar construct. But, still with a bit of supper club left over.  But it is what it is; supper clubs are being retooled ad nauseam to accommodate the sports bar hot-wings generation. The smoke filled steak house is a relic from the past, at least in the southern part of Wisconsin.

All that history being as it may, Tully's is not too bad a joint to eat at.  The parking lot was packed - always a good sign.

Tully's has lots of nooks and crannies to find a seat.  The bar is centralized in the fray and it was quite busy. We found a table were there is a good view of the busy intersection at the corner of Badger and Monona Roads.  A tube of tarter sauce sat patiently amongst the other condiments.

I and Chris ordered the all-you-can-eat lightly breaded Cod. Heide went for the Perch.  Both styles came in smartly cut pieces.  The outside breading was just crisp enough and the inside was tender and hot - a must for the quintsesential fish presentation.  I tried the lyonnaised read potatoes as a side the the ladies ordered the garlic mashed potatoes.  Everything was just right.

One thing Tully's still does that other joints have abandoned is the offering of a generous salad bar with the meal.  I zeroed in on the potato salad, hot baked beans, and a seafood casserole-esque dish.

Tully's Food & Spirits is cool with Cool Dadio. Find them at 6401 Monona Drive, in Monona, Wisconsin. They are just off the Belt-line. Call (608) 222-4995 for more information.

Note: You can find a chronological list at the Cool Dadio Media Fish Fry Page of these fish frys as we have visited them.  The list presents the most recently visited fish fry at the top, in lieu of alphabetical order.
