It's fall season in Wisconsin and that means it is also church dinner season.  God's flock does good chow. So, always on the hunt for said good eats, the Dadio peruses the local announcements for the aforementioned church gigs.  Alas, my young work colleagues are unmovable to the extraordinary meals they will miss once again yet again during..., yet again another fall festival season.  They will unknowingly languish at some McBurger joint eating junk for 20 Bucks.

So last Sunday, I dusted off the teal and cream Harley, and off the Dadio goes, with wife in tow to one of our first 2011 church dinners.  Poetically, our first dinner landed on the tenth anniversary of September 11, 2001.  I suppose we are unwittingly and quietly celebrating our good fortune of still being around after 10 years of perennial war.  But let's talk food.

Our journey took us a few miles west of Janesville, Wisconsin, to St. Augustine Catholic Church in rural Rock County on the edge of Footville.  It was a beautiful pre-fall day.  When ever I have been away from Wisconsin, I think of the kind of panorama you can see from the front yard of this church  - slightly rolling hills, mature corn fields, beautiful late summer green fence rows and woods, and houses peeking out of the old trees.

The good pilgrims of St. Augustine put on a heck of an annual feed.  Fresh rolls waited for us at our family style table. They offered both roast beef and ham.  Of course the mashed potatoes and gravy were homemade and abundant.  When we got to the buffet, they were serving up tender green beans. There was also fresh diced peaches, cole slaw, and cottage cheese.  It seems like I remember tasty potato salad as well (I go to so many of these events I will give these guys the credit for the most recent potato salad presentation.

To end the meal I partook of some homemade cake and a fresh cup of coffee.  I believe the cake was some kind of okra or cucumber or something like that - it was darn good.  The desert table was packed with options.

The above menu is why you must consider getting to a few these events before you kick the bucket - too late then.

For the record, this particular post is in regards to the meal that was held on Sunday, September 11, 2011.  Find St. Augustine Catholic Church at 280 Haberdale Drive in Rural Footville, Wisconsin. Call (608) 876-6252 for more information about parish events; or, visit their Web site at  www.staugustinefootville.org .
