Feiler's Restaurant - Madison - Friday Night Fish Fry

Readers may or not remember from my writings and from just knowing me, that we used to live just off of Verona Road in Madison for a couple of years.  It was a great old neighborhood with a few neighborhood bars and eateries here and there.  One such eatery, was Feiler's Restaurant.

It's funny what you don't do.  We lived in Madison for a while, drove by the old building everyday, and for about a year, never went in.  Finally, one day, I said to myself, "I better pop in this place, it actually looks intriguing."  Back in those days as it turned out, I then began to put down a few Leinenkugel Reds on tap at their bar from time to time.  And a couple of times we ate their broiled Cod which they have always been known for.  But this was 20 years ago.  They have been on my bucket list for awhile to revisit, and revisit we did.

The building has not changed a bit.  The neighborhood grew up around them.  They still have the areal photo of the building sitting all by itself as the then new Beltline highway was being built.  The bar is small but cozy.  The eating area keeps the same theme.  Our hostess and waitress were friendly and glad we mentioned how we used to pop in now and then.

Chris and Heide both tried the broiled Cod.  Heide assured me it was as good as she remembered from the old days.  This night I tried their deep-fried, beer-battered Cod offering. I found it excellent.

The two girls tried the twice-baked potato choice, something you don't see too often in a restaurant nowadays.  I went for the American fries. The spuds as well were excellent all around.  The meals came on a metal plate with a padded bottom.  Another something a bit different - for us anyway.

Chris and I ordered the salad with French and Ranch dressings.  Heide tried the cole slaw for a change, and called it, "Traditional, with a taste of cabbage, carrots, and onion."

The meal was topped off with a dandy basket of rolls.  At the bottom of the basket was a nice treat of garlic toast.

It was nice to get back to an old restaurant friend.  We were away too long.  As a side note, I had to show Mother-in-law Chris the El Tigre Lounge just on the other side of the Beltline - tiger stuff ad nauseam, but you just can't find a reason to not like the joint.  It was a great meal at Feiler's, a great nightcap at El Tigre, and a great revisit of some great memories.

Feiler's Restaurant is still cool with Cool Dadio. Find them at 5406 Verona Road, in Madison, Wisconsin (just south of the Beltline).  Call (608) 271-6237 for more information; or, visit their Web site at

Army Private First Class Andrew Nimir Meari, 21 Plainfield, Illinois (his father, Mahmoud Meari, lives in Grafton, Wisconsin), was killed on Monday, November 1, 2010 in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. Meari and Sergeant Jonathan M. The two soldiers intercepted an insurgent, wired with explosives, attempting to enter the outpost on a motorcycle. The insurgent detonated himself, killing both Meari and Curtis. However, he graduated from Port Washington High School in Wisconsin; and he graduated early. The Web site went on to quote family as saying, "He was remembered as outgoing and a bright student." Meari's grandfather was a Korean War veteran.
The Chicago Tribune noted Meari died trying to defend his unit comrades. He was know as "DJ Tiger" after his middle name Nimir, which means tiger in Arabic.
