Port Washington Fish Day - ( Sat / 20 July / 2011 )
This entry was posted on 7/22/2011 1:30 AM and is filed under Special and Seasonal Eats, Fairs Events Fests, Friday Night Fish Fry.
Traveling in the Wisconsin fish fry culture, I had heard of fish fry events in the Milwaukee area. Not so long ago a quick Google gleaned me one so called "Port Washington Fish Day." You have to have your ear to the ground with one-day events. Miss them and you wait another year. So, we psyched ourselves out to make the 100 mile journey to the city just north of Milwaukee.
And we are glad we did. They proudly announce they have run the event for 47 years and it is, "The world's largest one-day outdoor fish fry." They have it down to a science. But, a laid back science. There was plenty of parking at designated lots. Buses will shuttle you to the lakefront for free. They stop along the way. Just a foot note; a bartender mentioned they have 25 bars and 24 churches in town. One could hypothetically never make it to the real event if you kept stopping at all the bars.
There is no general entrance fee. There is a large general area of the town designated for the event along the lake (Lake Michigan), but it is so well ensconced into the fabric of the community one does not get the fenced in "stockade syndrome" you find at many huge events.
There was a carnival and five stages designated by music theme. We loved the "Blues Stage." We walked the whole area. We ended up on the hill where there was a craft show and car show. At the very end of the park by the residential area, they were giving helicopter rides for 30 Bucks a head. Not this day - I used to ride them all day for free.
But let's get to the fish. There were nine fish fry tents maned by local civic groups. The menus were basically coordinated the same and prices were the same. We stopped at the VFW tent, the Rotary tent, and the Kiwanis tent. We bought a basket of fish and chips at each one and spread our meal out during the day. They also offered a fried shrimp basket which Heide tried. I stayed with the fried fish and chips which set me back about five Bucks per basket. They all had vinegar, salt, ketchup, and tarter sauce at the ready. I love vinegar on deep fried fish. It reminds me of my Army days in England and Ireland.
Readers will think ill of me but I never asked what kind of fish it was. It was however great, and it sure tasted like Cod.
This is a great inexpensive laid back event. Get to it at least once before the nurse is whipping applesauce off your chin in the nursing home. It's too late then. We are already planning our escape up there for next year.
The "Port Washington Fish Day" is cool with Cool Dadio. You can find out all the good details on their Web site at www.portfishday.com.
