Evergreen Golf Club - Elkhorn - Friday Night Fish Fry
This entry was posted on 7/1/2011 1:30 AM and is filed under Friday Night Fish Fry.
My Walworth County connections bring me through Elkhorn now and then. For years I have noticed the Evergreen Golf Club on the north side of town. I used to be an avid golfer when I lived "Down South," but the short Wisconsin season up here drove me to other hobbies. But, this course usually has a sign up reminding people about their fish fry. And, I love trying places I have never been in before. So, the golf course got the the Friday fish fry nod. The building they serve up the chow in was built about five years ago and still holds its new demeanor. The old smaller building still sits patiently out by the road used nowadays for special events and the like. There is a big multipurpose banquette room in the new digs. I counted at least 40 tables and they kept them rotating with customers during our late afternoon early evening visit. Two of the walls are mostly windows with a good view of the golf course. On Friday evenings during the summer you will be serenaded in the big bar by a guy named Brian Fictum - "That Sax Guy." I noticed he had three saxophones sitting at the ready as he was setting up - a soprano, an alto, and a tenor sax. He actually sounded pretty good after he got fired up around 6:00 p.m. Straight away, it became quickly evident these folks put on quite a feed. It is reminiscent of the old time fish frys I remember as a kid - in volume of food of food and set up. The plates are heavy and the silverware follows suit. A basket of big soft rolls with real butter came to the table. Hiede ordered the "Famous Perch" hawked by the menu. Mother-in-law Chris tried the all-you-can-eat baked Haddock. I went for the all-you-can-eat fried Haddock. Both the Perch and the fried Haddock were lightly breaded. The baked Haddock had a smidgen of praprika dusted over it. The tarter was as it should be - tart and smooth. Family style potato pancakes came with our meals. And they were thin and homemade as your grandmother might have made. Hushpuppies came with the deal as did homemade-esque French fries as well. The cole slaw was diced and slightly tart in thin cream. All these fix'ns were all-you-can-eat as well. Everything was way above par - in the spirit of golf lingo. I had my Miller Lite, Heide tried their "Evergreen Cosmopolitan Martini," and Chris ordered a Vodka and tomato. No one in our party left this fish fry presentation hungry. It's one thing to dish out the chow in ample quantities and then another thing to make large quantities taste good. Evergreen Golf Club is Cool with Cool Dadio. Find them just north of Elkhorn on Highway 12/67. Call (262) 723 - 5722 for more information.
