One of my recent agendas has been to slide in some Walworth County and points east venue fish frys. There is a convenient connection making the journey easier as Heide grew up over in that neck of the woods and I lived in the city of Lake Geneva for a couple years back in the day.
This past week "we snuck over" to the south west corner of Geneva Lake to the city of Fontana. There you will find the long standing Abbey Resort. Heide's uncle once had a nifty house boat over there.
The Waterfront Restaurant & Bar, the resort's special eatery, has a dandy view of the harbor. Being a couple of early diners these days, it was still daylight. The joint has a long wall of huge floor to ceiling windows. We got a good table with a picturesque panorama of the piered boats and lakeside homes on the hill. One of this restaurant's specialties is pulled pork. The big cooker sat outside our window as well.
We were told by our waitress that
The Waterfront got a face lift a few years ago. These days it sports a wall of flat screen televisions. The bar is toward one end - the end with the high ceiling. We sat to the other end by the entrance to the eatery from the hotel lower hallway. It is a huge place. The wood floors make it look bigger. There is a wood theme as the ceiling, tables, and chairs are wood as well.
It was a brisk May afternoon so I opted for a cup of coffee but Heide got her consummate glass of root beer. Two nifty and neat plates, one for each of us, and each plate with three small white cups arrived at the table. It was our cole slaw, tarter sauce, and apple sauce. These sides were presented very cold.
The fish fry was an all-you-can-eat affair. And that included the side dishes as well. I ordered the fried Walleye. Heide tried a combination of baked and fried Cod. We both went for the potato pancakes. I can assure you both our plates were cleaned up to the last crumb. We did order just a bit more fish. But the thing I always enjoy when you can get hold of them these days, is the hushpuppies. I made sure I got another round of those old favorites.
They do a nice job with their fish fry. One thing to remember about resort type places or...."nicer places," is that in regards to Friday fish frys, it is the one meal the prices will usually be competitive with the mom and pop tavern fish. Point being, try not to let the word "resort" scare you off. You might be surprised if you give places like this a try.
The Waterfront Restaurant & Bar at The Abbey Resort is cool with Cool Dadio. Find then in the harbor on the south west corner of the lake at 269 Fontana Blvd., in Fontana, Wisconsin. Call the general number at 1-800-709 - 1323; or, visit the Website at
