Freddie's West End - Lake Geneva (Lake Como) - Friday Night Fish Fry
This entry was posted on 12/31/2010 1:30 AM and is filed under Taverns Wisconsin, Friday Night Fish Fry.
Lake Como is of course Heide's old stomping grounds. She grew up in the lake community which is between Lake Geneva and Elkhorn, Wisconsin. And I did work in the area for a couple of years many decades ago. I am on a crusade to visit many of the fish fry options offered by the region. It is an area replete with weekend vacationers and lake-home pilgrims. The economy over that way seems to defy the bad economy.
This night's fish foray takes us to a place that basically has one meal a week - the fish fry. Freddie's West End is close to the end of Lake Shore Drive on the north side of Lake Como. The first thing that hit my eye, of course, was the waitress - 20ish and cute as a button and nice too boot. This is clearly Heide's old world - lake people are matter-of-fact and nice despite outside challenges like economies run by idiots.
There is a front window to the lake and fish'n stuff on the walls. I noticed a boat paddle and some bamboo fish poles. A bait pale sat atop a cooler. The tables were set up with thick red plastic covers and folding chairs to sit your tired posteriors on. The place has been a tavern forever. The bar has a fish-hook bend and seated around it were the local old guard. Of course it took a few extra minutes to leave as Heide ran into a few old acquaintances.
"Mary Lynn's cole slaw" was hawked on the menu. It was indeed up to expectations. Heide tried the Lake Perch with potato pancakes. Both were dandy as I did the married thing and reached across for a fork full or two, or three. I opted for the Walleye Pike which was also so nicely prepared as Wisconsin Walleye should be. I chose the baby baked potatoes. The little potatoes were tiny but excellent with skins and all. Some day I should do a whole category on potato choices in Wisconsin. Rye bread accompanied our meals. The whole deal was topped off with two mini Eclairs pastries.
Freddie's West End is cool with Cool Dadio. Find them at W4118 Lake Shore Drive on the north side of Lake Como. The official address is Lake Geneva. Call (262) 248 - 6183 for more information.
