The New Liberty Inn - Beloit - Friday Night Fish Fry
This entry was posted on 12/17/2010 1:30 AM and is filed under Supper Clubs Wisconsin, Friday Night Fish Fry.
I love finding Friday fish frys that are close to home and I never realized the place was there. The New Liberty Inn down in Beloit fits in that category. I have been seeing a blurb for their fish fry in the activities section of the local paper lately.
I was told by people in the know that it is more supper club in nature. When we got there it was a pleasant surprise. It has the outside demeanor of an old brick house. There is ivy growing on the brick sides. The place is firmly planted in the old near westside neighborhood in Beloit. Heide guesses the place actually was an inn back in the day.
The waitress said the current owner have had the business for four years. So, "New" is subjective. Four years in restaurant world is a long time. But, they say it has been an eatery since the 1970s.
It is more of a mini-supper club type set up due to the small interior. But it lends itself to being quite cozy. It has an old house interior style. It is small, cozy, and warm. There is also a small and welcoming bar area. They also have a room downstairs that can be used for groups.
Heide tried the baked Cod which came as a full dinner and chose Au Gratin potatoes. I thought the Au Gratin potato preparation tasted like good Swiss Roesti potatoes. She tried the French Onion soup; I tried it and it was excellent. A regular salad, a basket of rolls and butter, and a thoughtful relish tray with honey mustard accompanied her presentation.
I went for the traditional deep fried Cod, which was prepared way beyond the tavern fish I am used to. I ordered a backed potato. I tried some Red Manhattan Clam Chowder with my meal. My meal came with some good creamy cole slaw which had more of a gourmet timbre; at any rate it came in a big bowl and was damn good.
The New Liberty Inn is cool with Cool Dadio. Find them at 1901 Liberty Avenue, Beloit, Wisconsin. Call (608) 362 - 2262 for more information.
