Buckaroo's BBQ and Buck Off Saloon (Liberty Station) - Milton - Friday Night Fish Fry

This entry was posted on 12/10/2010 1:30 AM and is filed under Friday Night Fish Fry.

Not long ago on a pass through the west end of Milton (the old Milton Junction), I thought I saw Liberty Station as...Liberty Station.  We had not been to the eatery for a couple years, and this night they got the fish fry nod.  When we got there things were a bit different than I remember.  Some of the tables of the once supper club-esque place were replaced with a pool table.  When we sat down the waitress brought us a humble menu.  Then I realized the name on the menu was now Buckaroo BBQ and Buck Off Saloon.  Some Liberty Station name labels still slipped out about the place.

I asked the waitress how long they had been a different genre and she smiled and said, "Just changed today."  It is still owned by the same folks - just a different shtick.  I am guessing the economy may have something to do with it.  It is definitely a more streamlined presentation.

Something that was always a bit unique about the place was its multi-level and multiple room decor.  That still remains the same.  The bar area has always been small and cozy.  Locals will know the outside as having a train theme.  In fact as we sat in one of the larger rooms to the west, a real train rolled by just yards away.  I am guessing this place actually used to really be the old train station.

Anyway, we were hunting down their latest fish fry offering.  Heide tried the three-piece deep fried Cod with a backed potato.  I tried something different for a change.  They serve up a chef special of Hobo Fish.  It is a dish of backed Cod smothered in a cream cheese sauce that sports pecans, garlic, and olives.  It was a nice departure from my usual fried obsession.  I also opted for a baked potato.

The cole slaw had a creamy and coarse texture which I particularly favor, as cole slaw goes.  I tried the fried fish with some tarter sauce and it still passes muster.

I wish them luck in their retooling endeavor.  Usually I do not interject much opinion in the matters of establishment presentation decisions, but in this economy, people must do what they must do to adapt - we all do.

Buckarro BBQ and Buck Off Saloon are cool with Cool Dadio.  Find them at 231 Front Street, in Milton, Wisconsin.  Call (608) 868  -  2873 for more information.
