Cooksville Lutheran Church - Cooksville - Harvest Dinner ( Sun / 14 Nov / 2010 )
This entry was posted on 12/2/2010 1:38 AM and is filed under Church Dinners.
Back behind the houses and trees off of Highway 59 in Cooksville, Wisconsin, you might notice Cooksville Lutheran Church. Cooksville still has one general store...I think. You will find the village somewhere between Edgerton and Evansville. The location of the church is right out of a post card. This fall day we visited their Harvest Dinner, the golden ripe cornfields were just a chip shot from the front door. It is an old building with some add-ons over the years. Big old pine trees guard the cemetery that flank the church. If only those centuries-old trees could talk. Inside, the church is humble, warm, and inviting. I would not go so far as to call it a minimalist decor, but from the modest stained glass windows to the friendly wood pews, the presentation is...frugal. This day we were after chow. The basement is rather small as basements go. Heide and I tucked ourselves at the end of two family size tables that had been pushed together. Each group of tables seemed to have a volunteer manning the food from the kitchen. There was a generous dish of turkey that kept getting filled up. The meal included dressing, gravy, mashed sweet potato, mashed potatoes, and rolls. I had at least two helpings of everything. The whole presentation was worth the visit. To my surprise, the lady selling the meal tickets, mentioned they had only been doing the annual event for five years or so. It was originally kicked off to raise funds for building upgrades - understandable considering many of these old churches are well over 100 years old. For the record, this particular post is in regards to the meal that was held on Sunday, November 14, 2010. Find Cooksville Lutheran Church at 11927 West Church Road in Cooksville, Wisconsin. Call (608) 882 - 4408 more information on other church activities. Or, visit their humble Web site at www.cooksvillelutheranchurch.org .
