Heide and I found yet another church dinner, this one within walking distance.  Mt. Zion United Methodist Church put on an ambitious dinner a couple Saturdays ago by presenting their eats for five hours from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  This is at least a couple more hours than the usual annual church dinners.  It takes a lot of effort to put together a couple hour meal let alone five hours.

The last time I was at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church it must have been 1966.  But, the caveat is I have never been in the place.  Some cousins of mine from down the street used to zip around the church parking lot on their go-cart.  I recall a couple of ride-a-longs.  None-the-less, that was at least four lifetimes ago, perhaps more.

This particular congregation seemed to be holding this years's dinner together without much help from a "youthful" presence.  But, be that as it may, the dinner was excellent.

The flagship entree was thick pork chops prepared in a Nesco slow cooker.  The chops were so tender, they fell off the bone when they served them up.  Of course their were other treats.  There were green beans, mashed sweet potatoes, and a cheesy hashbrown casserole.  A cup of apple sauce came with the deal.  A basket of rolls and carafes of coffee waited patiently at the family style tables.  Heide got some good fresh milk from a pitcher

I topped off my meal with a hunk of banana cake with pecan on top.  Heide got a piece of apple pie with crumb topping.

The historians at the meal noted the annual meal used to feature Turkey.  But a couple years ago the switch was made to chops.  Hopefully, they can keep the tradition going on into the future.

For the record, this particular post is in regards to the meal that was held on Saturday, October 23, 2010. Find Mt. Zion United Methodist Church at 2130 Mt. Zion Avenue, Janesville, Wisconsin.  Call (608) 752  -  4688 more information on other church activities.

Wisconsin Military Service Person Special Mention of the Week
(each week Cooldadiomedia mentions a Wisconsin service person killed in Iraq or Afghanistan)

Marine Lance Corporal Harry Hoyt Timberman, 20, Minong, Wisconsin, was killed during combat operations in Alluja, Anbar province, Iraq on Saturday, March 17, 2007. He was a rifleman assigned to Company G, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, out of Twentynine Palms, California. Minong is a tiny community of about 900 people in the northwest region of Wisconsin about 50 miles south of Duluth/Superior. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel mentioned Timberman graduated from Washburn County Alternative High School in Shell Lake in June 2004. He joined the Marine Corps in August of 2005. His unit was deployed to Iraq in January of 2007. Timberman had moved to Minong from Colorado in 2001. He was on the school's wrestling team and volunteered with "Students Offering Support," a group that organized events and engaged younger students in activities. As a peer helper he worked to bring younger kids into school activities, and organized school events with them. Minnesota Public Radio said Timberman attended the Northwood School for a couple of years. The Northwood School has about 400 students spanning pre-kindergarten through the 12th grade. The high school uses the moniker "Evergreens," a signature image of the north woods area of Wisconsin. At the time of his death, Harry Timberman was survived by his father, also named Harry Timberman, and his mom, Cynthia Coshow; two brothers and a sister who live in Colorado; and fiancee Garla Gustafson. Just thinking about those slow cooked thick pork chops is making me hungry. How long before you compile a book on these places? It would make things easier to find for guys like me.

      Thanks Jerry,

I have a few books in the oven (no pun intended).

The first to be finished will probably be "Jobs of Bob."

"Fish Fry Across Wisconsin" will probably be next.

Thanks for reading my humble postings; see you soon I hope.
