New Horizons Sports Cafe - Delavan - Friday Night Fish Fry

This entry was posted on 9/24/2010 2:00 AM and is filed under Taverns Wisconsin, Friday Night Fish Fry.

My notes tell me the place I am about to write about is called New Horizons Sports Bar and Grill.  When I checked for a phone number on the Internet it is listed as New Horizons Sports Cafe. Welcome to Wisconsin, welcome to the world of Internet.  Anyway, the Friday Fish Fry was excellent.  The owner who introduced himself as Dave chatted with us for a bit - a true Wisconsin custom.

You will find the joint down in the transitional area of Delavan on Highway 50 between the old town and the newer area built up around Interstate 43.  Just before the train tracks, bowling alleys, and fire station is a row of old shops.  On the end is New Horizons.

In good Wisconsin tavern style, the pool table was covered for the fish fry and tables took up the usual game area.  While waiting for our dinners, I noticed it looks like the interior has been tuned up recently.  The place is thoughtfully decorated. The outside has some good tavern neon signs.  It has good tavern timbre.

Heide ordered a Root Beer and opted for the Walleye dinner with potato pancakes.  I weighed in on the side of the two-piece Deep Fried Cod dinner.  I went for the  potato pancakes as well - of course they come with apple sauce.  The potato pancakes were exceptional - they had that good crispy edge with a good tender inside.  Both fish presentations were excellent...not a crumb was left for the poor old garage kitty.

The dinners came with buttered rye bread, good tavern cole slaw, and smooth tarter sauce.  The whole experience was pleasant - the whole package is worth putting on your fish fry list. You might want to take this good ol' Wisconsin tavern fish fry before that inevitable someday when you find yourself eating pureed fish in the nursing home.

New Horizons Sports Cafe is cool with Cool Dadio.

Marine Lance Corporal Jesse Daniel Tillery, 19, Vesper, Wisconsin died Saturday, December 2, 2006 during combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq. Tillery was assigned to the 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was driving an amphibious assault vehicle when it was struck by an improvised explosive device. Tillery's home of Vesper is in the center of Wisconsin northwest of the city of Wisconsin Rapids. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel noted Tillery was the youngest of three brothers who had served in the military in Iraq. Tillery's brother Jim served as an Army Specialist in a medical unit and had spent two tours in Iraq; brother Jared also served as an Army Specialist in supply. The paper also mentioned Jesse did play Little League baseball when younger, but was not necessarily remembered for playing high school sports. Instead, he was remembered for taking great joy in simple things like family and friends. He was also a very well liked guy. When young he enjoyed playing with military figurines. He was also remembered for his great imagination, not being boring, and being very respectful and polite. Tillery graduated from Wisconsin Rapis's Lincoln High School in June 2005. He had signed up for the Marines during his senior year. Wisconsin 2007 Senate Joint Resolution 15 notes Jesse was born on May 18, 1987, in Vesper, Wisconsin.
