Jims's Pizzeria - Janesville - Friday Night Fish Fry
This entry was posted on 7/16/2010 1:44 AM and is filed under Friday Night Fish Fry.
Lately I have been taking a closer look at the documentary film "Fish Fry Night Milwaukee" (2009), by Ron Faiola. They made some intriguing Friday fish fry suggestions and I have been meaning to further invade the Milwaukee fish fry culture. The film makes mention of the many surprising places one may find a fish fry in Milwaukee. For example, some pizzerias over there serve fish fry. In the mean time my lousy work schedule often keeps me close to home. So with a pizza theme stuck in my brain. We headed out to Jim's Pizzeria here in Janesville a couple Fridays ago to check out their fish fry offering. Milwaukee does not have a strangle hold on pizza joints that serve fish frys.
I ducked into Jim's once last year and had their fish fry, but was taking a hiatus from writing and never documented the experience. It is still pretty much the same.
Let's start out with the peripherals. They offer both a fried Cod, and a fried Perch dinner on their menu all the time. Also, they keep the fryers going later than most places. Fried fish after 10:00 p.m. seems to be a rarity in Southern Wisconsin. We were in Jim's well after 10:00 p.m. on our visit. This is a big deal to a guy like me that has a work schedule from hell. It is hard for me to slide into the senior citizen time-line of 4:00 p.m. fish frys or restaurant visits in general.
I ordered the Perch dinner and Heide opted the Cod. Each dinner came with three large pieces. I am rather fond of the attention Jim's pays to the side dishes. Each dinner comes with a good heap of French frys. They always have a good dinner salad in lieu of cole slaw. Heide and I always ask for French and Ranch dressings - a habit my mom got us hooked on. There will be an ample basket of good soft bread with "real" butter pads to go with your meal. The tarter sauce tasted homemade.
Of course I ordered a glass of Miller Lite. It was nice and cold and the price is reasonable. Heide ordered a Coca Cola.
One of my favorite tricks when ever I go to Jim's for what ever type of meal, is that I order a 12-inch pepperoni pizza to go. I love to heat their pizza up the next morning for a breakfast snack.
Jim's Pizzeria and their humble fish fry presentation is cool with Cool Dadio. Find them at 1103 Center Avenue, Janesville, Wisconsin. Call (608) 754 - 8266 for more information and to-go orders.
