Wilson's Bar and Grill - Madison - Friday Night Fish Fry
This entry was posted on 6/11/2010 2:27 AM and is filed under Taverns Wisconsin, Friday Night Fish Fry.
Once in a while I "Google" my own name to see what's out there if anything. Some of my stuff is turning up all over, in the darndest places on the Web; especially some of the photographs I took in Iraq. I knew that was a possibility when I put them on the Web. Hey, I am flattered.
Never ceasing to be surprised at the Web, I found my "Dadio" blog nick-name on the www.madisonfishfry.com site under their posting about Bennett's (Gene) Meadowood Country Club. It's actually a neighborhood tavern I used to live next to up in Madison. I had done a review on Bennett's and, madisonfishfry.com took my lead to visit the place. As it turned out they were only marginally impressed with that fish presentation; however, we each have much different review standards.
As the madisonfishfry.com writer suspects, I do not even post a review if I do not like a place's fish fry attempt. And let me say there have been a couple I have recommended that just squeaked by. But, we differ on Bennett's. I like Bennett's because I used to live next to the place, it is a gritty joint, and they are unapologetic for their tavern demeanor. The timbre of a place has a lot to do with my fish fry reviews besides how the food tastes. I can overlook a tired side dish or even two, if I really just love the tone of the establishment I am reviewing. But, I digress.
I have dropped in on the madisonfishfry.com site off and on over the years. They specialize Madison area places and have an impressive comprehensive list built up. I missed the review that mentioned me back in February 2010. I found it only a few weeks ago, like I say, after doing a Google on my own name.
To madisonfishfry.com's credit, the writer or writers do not identify themselfs - a standard restaurant reviewer tenet. I, on the other hand am rather easy to identify with minimal effort - my name is on my Web site. I do never anounce to anyone in a place I am eating that I am doing a review. I had to scold my wife once because she blabbed to the hostess my hobby was writing about Friday fish frys. And it turned out, that place she blabbed had a tired presentation. Wife has thankfully never made that mistake again.
They added my fish fry effort list of reviews to their "links " page. So, to return the appreciated nod they gave me, I got out on madisonfishfry.com's site and looked for one of their favorites. Wilson's Bar and Grill came on radar because it looks like the writer has been there...yes, 114 times over the years - better check this place out then.
Always looking to kill two birds with one stone, I swung by Wilson's in the afternoon before trekking up to do a review of the Club Bristol strip club later that evening.
My quick count saw 15 or so flat television screens. Sports was tuned in ad nauseam. I am assuming that the gang at the bar when I arrived at 2 p.m., were well-seasoned neighborhood locals. At that hour, it was mostly dudes. Some of the screens were placed at the end of wall tables like the old jukebox stations at the tables in the old soda fountain joints. There is a good picture window to look out at Atwood Avenue. The place has two pool tables. And, there is plenty of tables to eat at or drink at. The place is adapting to the new tavern mantra, yet the old tin ceiling still holds the place up in the midst of all the encroaching high-tech.
Wood-backed chairs line the extra-long bar. They each sport the bar's name. The place is lined with North Woods pine-type paneling - this, in the heart of eclectic "Mad-City."
I ordered their Icelandic Cod. You can either get the two-piece or the three-piece, of which I got the "two." The fish was lightly breaded and tender on the inside as my fork easily cut it. I got a class of Miller Lite beer, and because it was a hot day, I ordered a real Coca-Cola in a can. The fish came with an abundant heap of fries. The cole slaw came in the consummate tavern cup - it has the unique texture of being creamy as well as crunchy. The presentation came with a lemon slice, fresh Thanksgiving Dinner-esque roll, tasty tarter sauce, and a pad of butter.
The younger bartender that took my order was helpful, quick, and friendly. With meal, drinks, and tip, I got out of there for about 13 Bucks.
