The Butterfly Club - Beloit, Wisconsin - Friday Night Fish Fry
This entry was posted on 4/23/2010 1:44 AM and is filed under Supper Clubs Wisconsin, Friday Night Fish Fry.
Both Heide and I have to admit that after growing up in this South Central Wisconsin area and then perusing taverns and joints for fish frys, neither of us have ever heard of The Butterfly Club in Beloit. Now that it is on our radar screen, when we ask people they say, "Oh yeah, it is a good place to eat down in Beloit. Go figure.
This is the consummate Wisconsin Supper Club. Get there while you can, supper clubs are becoming a part of our Wisconsin historical memories like family farms. This place is unapologetically supper club. There is a neat and tidy color green theme. The wait staff is dressed up. No tavern blue jeans clad waitress here. The place seems vast compared to the taverns we haunt. They are definitely mindful of the Korean War generation that still might like the supper club construct and the two-piece lounge band reflected that. When the band is not around you might hear Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Bennet, or Steve Lawrence over the sound system.
There is a large entry area with lots of windows with a good rural view. I thought the place was Art Deco-esque. The carpet is large-leafy green to match the rest of the green theme. The whole presentation is unapologetically...a bit gaudy. The Empire State wall lights sealed the deal for me.
The fish fry was surprisingly inexpensive considering all the supper club decor and service. I tried the three-piece Cod. Out came three giant pieces of tender and lightly breaded fish. I opted for the au gratin potatoes. They came in a mini hot casserole bowl - very hot. Heide and her mom Chris tried the Pollock and fries. I tried a piece and it is a nice departure from the consummate Cod.
The rolls came lightly floured. There was a table bowl of tasty cole slaw, and as well, a bowl of smooth tarter sauce. The whole affair with a couple of adult beverages and tip cost the three of us around 35 Bucks. Astounding in today's economy and considering it is a "nice" place; we got a great meal and a great deal.
The Butterfly Club is cool with Cool Dadio. Find them at 5246 East County Road X, Beloit Wisconsin just off Highway 43 on the East side of Beloit. Call (608) 362 - 8577 for more information; or, visit their Web site at http://butterflyclub.us .
