Monk's Bar and Grill - Wisconsin Dells - Wisconsin-esque taverns; Burgers

I had a chance to spend a couple days in "The Dells" in early April.  I had the place all to myself.  I like the old downtown strip.  It is such a contrast to the hyper tourist sites that have developed over the decades between Lake Delton and Wisconsin Dells.  The area is now known as the indoor water park capital of the world.  They really invented some giant resorts to keep the tourists coming in all seasons.  This visit was the first time I ever just took it easy and took a good look at the old town.

I kept walking past a tavern where good food smells were wafting out.  After a day, I could not resist anymore and went in for lunch.  Monk's Bar and Grill is long and narrow.  In typical tavern fashion, you can exit out the back to the alley.  I like that, because the best way to see a town is to stroll up an alley now and then.

There is a back stairs leading up to the second floor were you will find more seating.  Of course there is an old tin ceiling. Behind the bar you will see the consummate old wood cabinetry.  The bar has a wood rail and a synthetic top.  There is a good foot rest.  Toward the back there is a booth seating. The place has a red and white Wisconsin Badger theme.  There is photos of several 1950s Badger football players.

Along one wall is six glass inset cabinets with a vast collection of firefighter and ambulance patches. The grill is by  the front window.  There wall opposite the bar is old brick.

The special the day I was there was a Western Burger with a side of chilli.  The presentation was quite good.  The bartender made sure my lunch experience was a good one; the cook seemed to pay special attention to the fact I like my burger a bit well done.  With a Diet Pepsi and tip I got out of there for 10 Bucks.

Monk's Bar and Grill is cool with Cool Dadio.  I found it a pleasant surprise in a bastion of tourist traps.  According to their Web site they have three locations.  There is another Monks at the Wilderness Resort in the Dells, and one in Baraboo.

Find Monk's Bar and Grill at 220 Broadway in downtown Wisconsin Dells on he old strip. Call (608) 254  -  2955 for more information; or, visit their Web site at:
