Aztalan Inn Bar & Grill - Aztalan (Lake Mills) - Friday Night Fish Fry

This entry was posted on 4/9/2010 4:41 AM and is filed under Friday Night Fish Fry.

The Aztalan Inn Bar & Grill is across the street from the Aztalan museum which features prehistoric artifacts recovered from the surrounding area.  The theme of the museum, Aztalan State Park, and the area is the history of the Aztalan people that lived there from around the years 900 to 1200.  They were stockade and large-dirt-mound  builders.

But all that rich history aside, a Friday ago, our mission was fish fry.  This joint has made the Dadio pages before under the "Tavern Burgers and Fries;" and, "Wisconsin-esque Taverns" Categories.  They have a rather ambitious menu for a tavern; and, a daily special presentation to match. You will find such offerings as ribs, burgers, pizza, Prime Rib, Scallops, chicken, and Shrimp on any given night.  And of course, there will be fish fry.

The tavern is in the tiny enclave of Aztalan, Wisconsin, just east of Lake Mills.  In typical tavern fashion, people find a place to park their vehicles somewhere. The kitchen opens at 11:00 a.m. - the consummate Wisconsin tavern formate. In that spirit, they also do a Wednesday fish fry. They have a full page on the menu dedicated to fish fry. They do not take credit cards, but they do have an ATM machine. I was able to get a class of Miller Lite for a Buck-75. There is a small eating area dog-legged off the bar area.  We ate in the bar area. The place is really crowded by 6:00 p.m., so plan ahead.

Heide tried the deep fried Perch.  I went for the lightly hand-breaded Walleye.  We both got the potato pancakes. Heide's mom Chris tried the baked fish and chose the sweet potato fries.  The salad bar comes with the meals.  They commandeer the pool table and cover it with a table cloth for a salad bar platform.  I was particularly fond of the onion and beets dish.

The Aztalan Inn Bar & Grill is cool with Cool Dadio. Find them at W6630 County Road B, Lake Mills, WI 53551.  Call (920) 723  -  1565 for more information; or, (920) 648  -  3206 for carry outs.
