Saint John's Lutheran Church - Edgerton, Wisconsin - Friday Night Fish Fry (annual)
This entry was posted on 4/1/2010 2:20 AM and is filed under Church Dinners, Friday Night Fish Fry.
This is the time of year in Wisconsin when the annual church fish frys gaggle up. Last week I found a blurb in the Janesville Gazette for one such fish fry at the Saint John's Lutheran Church in Edgerton.
Straight off I realized I had never seen this church before, but churches abound in rural Wisconsin so my ignorance is nothing to sweat over. I knew I was in the right place because they were cooking out front on the side walk to the side door. I pondered this for a moment and then thought, "Good idea. Frying fish is messy, so if you only do it once a year, why mess up your kitchen?" As well, I wonder if fish cooks a bit different out side in the cool crisp spring air? The last time I saw fish being cooked outside, I was at a fish boil in Door County. Before that, we were cooking some lake fish over a fire at the camp ground.
I talked to the pastor and a couple of the cooks after I ate, and they said they would try to have the event every year. They have done it before. They got their fish from a vendor and some of the church members fixed up a homemade batter.
It all passed the Cool Dadio muster. They offered baked or fried fish. I tried the fried of course. There was baked potatoes and French fries. Cole slaw, apple sauce, and rolls were waiting at the family style tables. Milk and coffee came with the deal. And of course, as with any consummate church dinner, comes the homemade desserts.
When you go to these events, you better be able to conversate. You will find yourself at a big table with other peeps enjoying the feast.
The whole thing set me back nine Bucks. Saint John's Lutheran Church is cool with Cool Dadio. Find them at 257 East High Street in Edgerton, Wisconsin. Hopefully they will have their version of fish fry next year and every year. Call (608) 884 - 3515 for more information.
