Bushel & Peck's - Beloit, Wisconsin - Friday Night Fish Fry - "Fish Fry Night Milwaukee," by Ron Faiola
This entry was posted on 3/19/2010 2:32 AM and is filed under Friday Night Fish Fry.
Back in February, I gave a nod to Bushel and Peck's down in Beloit for their eclectic café-deli shtick. It was one of the places helping out with the Beloit International Film Festival (BIFF). The response was so good for Ron Faiola's documentary, "Fish Fry Night Milwaukee" that they brought back the film last week for another showing.
What's more interesting, on that original Friday night showing they served up a special fish fry. Response was so enthusiastic, they have decided to have the fish fry every Friday from five to eight p.m. One of the owners I chatted with said they will be getting the fish from a lake "up nort'."
I think the key to Bushel and Peck's fish fry offering is the Milwaukee-esque presentation. They serve up beer-battered, deep-fried Lake Perch. With your heap of thoughtfully breaded fish will come equally well prepared deep-fried shrimp. Potatoes will be fried wedge slices. The "heap" of fish, is a longtime Milwaukee fish fry signature. The cole slaw has a unique taste with the emphasis on cabbage. The tarter is beyond average tavern style with an obvious favoring of the herbs that are part of the greater theme of the eclectic eatery.
As I did last time I opted for a 24-ounce bottle of Heineken. I even opened it with my jack knife can opener. Tip is not a big factor as you order up at the deli counter. The beer and fish fry set me back 20 Bucks. That's a bit high for one person, but you will not be disappointed and it is well worth it. Also, this fish fry is a bit different than other area presentations as it favors the more Milwaukee oriented style.
I got a chance to talk to Producer, Writer, Editor, Director and chief cook and bottle washer Ron Faiola about his film about fish frys. He said you could make several sequels just going to Milwaukee fish frys. A lot of the choice as to who got in his film actually rotated around which businesses responded to his initial inquiries. Ron Faiola is cool with Cool Dadio. You can find more information about his work and were you can buy a copy of "Fish Fry Night Milwaukee" at www.FishFryNight.com .
Bushel and Peck's is still cool with Cool Dadio as well. I will no-doubt be back to give them a try perhaps during Beloit Farmers Market when the weather tunes up real soon now. Find them at 328 State Street in Beloit, Wisconsin. Call (608) 363 - 3911 for more information.
