Hilltop Inn - Cross Plains - Friday Night Fish Fry

Back when we lived on the southwestern side of Madison we got over to the eateries on that side of town more.  When I worked at the Tire Desk at the Madison Farm and Fleet, I use to ask the old farmers coming in for tractor and truck parts and service, if they knew of any good fish frys.  Hilltop Inn seemed to get several nods.

Just south of Cross Plains up in the rural hills sits the Hilltop Inn. In winter it can be windy up there even in the wooded area.  But once inside the building, the low ceilings and small bar always set a warm and cozy feeling.  You will always get a greeting from the bartender.  And there is always good baskets of snack-mix placed around the bar.

There is a salad bar that comes with most dinners.  It does not come with Friday fish however.  You can get it for a few dollars extra.  They always have that croûton bread in a bowl.  A full loaf of dinner bread will come with your meal.  The generous dish of cole slaw is both crispy and creamy.

I ordered the two-piece deep-fried Cod.  Heide opted for the four-piece.  They also offer Perch and Walleye.  The Cod is prepared very tender with a good crispy and flaky outer breading.  I always call this style "the church fish fry Cod."  I chose fried potatoes with my meal. Heide went for a baked potato.

With our fish dinners, adult beverages, and tip, we got out of there for around 30 Bucks.

Hilltop Inn is still cool with Cool Dadio.  Find them at 4173 County Road P, just south of Cross Plains, Wisconsin.  Call (608) 798  -  2893 for more information.
