DJ's Shortstop - Milton (Charley Bluff) - Sunday football eats
This entry was posted on 1/28/2010 4:57 PM and is filed under Taverns Wisconsin, Sunday football eats.
Always on the look-out for Sunday football eats, this past weekend I swung by DJ's Shortstop out on Charley Bluff on the south west end of Lake Koshkonong. This lake area is a well kept secret in Southern Wisconsin planted between Janesville and Madison. DJ's is a consummate lake area tavern. Dan and partner keep the place neat and tidy. Any time you stop in you might overhear a conversation about ice fishing, snowmobiles, or taxidermy; or, just about any other topic under the sun for that matter.
Last Sunday my goal was some beer and eats on game-day. DJ's offers a basket of fish and wings per customer at no charge. They serve it up from noon to 3:00 p.m. on Sundays. I suggest it would be polite to imbibe in some adult beverages in reciprocation. In your basket you will find some thoughtfully prepared fried Smelt, some good fried chicken wings, and some potatoes wedges.
Don't forget our lake areas took a beating during bad flooding in the spring of 2008. DJ's survived despite of being so close to the perennially flooding Koshkonong. If you need a change of pace and want to get out to the lake country for a break give DJ's Shortstop a tumble.
Back on May 2nd, 2008, I did a fish fry posting for DJ's. And not to long after, on May 23rd, 2008, I did a tavern burger posting for DJ's. The excerpts from my first two postings are below.

An old bartender of mine is pursuing his own bar with a partner out Charley Bluff way. The new name of the place that has been a bar for a long time is DJ's Shortstop. In the spirit of the World Wide Web audience, Charley Bluff is an area not far from Milton, Wisconsin in a neighborhood on Lake Koshkonong.
The first thing I thought as the fish dinner was put before me as I sat right up at the bar was, "thoughtful." The presentation was thoughtful. There will be a heap of crispy on the outside, tender on the inside Cod on your plate. They offer potato pancakes, of which I know are a pain in the behind to make. Them cakes are good, way beyond hash browns. They will of course come with apple sauce or sour cream. The cole slaw begs of homemade.
I was running solo last Friday night so Heide was not along - we got to get her out there - she grew up in lake country. With tip and dinner I got out of there for under 10 Bucks.

This Memorial Day weekend, Heide and I were on the hunt for a good burger and fries. We hopped on the teal and cream Harley and headed for my old bartender friend Dan's place out Charley Bluff way. DJ's Shortstop I had visited a couple weeks ago for a good fish fry. In the spirit of the World Wide Web audience, Charley Bluff is an area not far from Milton, Wisconsin in a neighborhood on Lake Koshkonong.
Just as with the fish fry, our cheese burgers were put together with a "thoughtful" presentation. Because I work weird hours in the media world, my afternoon burgers were my first meal of the day. And therefore, because I was hungry I ordered onion rings and mushrooms. I believe the onion rings were beer battered. And the breaded mushrooms really hit the spot. The burgers came with flavored fries as well. There were such a heap of crispy fries we could not finish them.
DJ's is out in lake country. I grew up not far down the road as the crow flies. We finally got Heide out to Dan's. She could not join me when went there for fish. It is a culture we share as she grew up in lake country of Walworth County. With tip and sodas we got out of there for under 25 Bucks.
DJ's Shortstop is still cool with Cool Dadio.
Give DJ's a try - they are cool with Cool Dadio - I am betting you will not be disappointed. You will find them at 11601 North Lake Street out on Charley Bluff off Lake Koshkonong. Call (608) 868 - 5855 for more information.
