Crandall's - Hebron, Illinois - Friday Night Fish Fry
This entry was posted on 1/8/2010 2:10 AM and is filed under Supper Clubs Wisconsin, Friday Night Fish Fry.
In this economy, getting your product and your shingle out in front of people's eyeballs is critical. I have noticed enough ads for Crandall's down in Hebron, Illinois lately, that they hooked me. "World-Famous broasted chicken and Friday fish fry." Ok, you got me.
I put on an old Chicago Bears stocking hat and Heide and I made the journey down across the Wisconsin-Illinois state line (football demilitarized zone) from Packer into Bear territory.
Because of the weather, we left early and arrived around 5:30 p.m. There was plenty of seating. We did notice that it gets pretty busy after 6:00 p.m. There is a booth side of the restaurant, and there is a dinner area. The experience is warm on a cold night; they have two fireplaces. The seating is very open and you do not get a crowded feeling. There is an inviting bar between the two eating areas.
The furnishings are new and bright. Crandall's is definitely a modern supper club. Our waitress stressed they have been around for a long time and have only gone through a couple of ownership changes. It looks like there has been a couple of additions built on over the years as well.
Heide insisted on an appetizer and we opted for the zucchini, mushroom, and onion ring basket. This ain't tavern appetizers; this dish was well prepared with attention to detail.
Heide chose the all-you-can-eat fish fry. She took the potato pancake option. She ordered coffee on this cold night. I could not resist trying the all-you-can-eat broasted chicken. I decided on the mashed potatoes. My drink choice was Diet Pepsi.
Our meals came with some good café style crunchy cole slaw in cups. A capstone of the presentation is a basket of hot cinnamon rolls and dinner rolls. These reminded me of the type of rolls grandma might cook up on holidays.
With meals and tip we got out of there for 40 Bucks. Do keep in mind this type of dinner is very filling. I recommend eating light for lunch if you go to Crandall's for an evening meal. There was no way either of us were able to order more fish or chicken; we were plenty full on the initial orders.
Crandall's is cool with Cool Dadio. Find them at 10441 Route 47 just outside of Hebron, Illinois. Call (815) 648 - 2606 for more information.
