Moose Creek Bar and Grille - Elkhorn - Friday Night Fish Fry
This entry was posted on 12/18/2009 2:54 AM and is filed under Friday Night Fish Fry.
Years ago - too many years ago - it was in a former century - before we were married, Heide looked into the Moose Club in Elkhorn, Wisconsin as a possible wedding reception location. The place was rather utilitarian as civic club buildings usually are. I remember the people were nice. There was a dandy wood floor. The stumbling block for Heide was, well, the guest of honor - the stuffed moose head on the wall.
"That musty, dusty, dirty old moose head will not be joining us at our wedding reception," Heide said, with finality. If you have ever been married, you know there was no turning back from said declaration.
"Sorry ol' chap," I thought, as we moved on to the county club. I thought I could see a bit of a tear well up in the old moose's eye.
But fate has a way of tapping you on the shoulder. Heide saw an ad in a publication I bring home from work, for a restaurant in the old Moose Club building in Elkhorn. For about ten years now the establishment has been a private restaurant. It is urban legend nowadays that time honored civic groups have had trouble staying afloat - if they are lucky, they can reinvent themselves as a restaurant et cetera - a topic for another posting.
Moose Creek Bar and Grille offers an all-you-can-eat Friday fish fry. It will set you back $11.95 a piece.
The place is decked out now with pictures and keepsakes. The eating area and bar have a warm and welcoming atmosphere. And, there on one of the walls, is the stuffed head of my old friend - Mr. Moose. I gave him a little nod as I sat down. I even thought I saw a little wink come from Ol' Mr. Moose's taxadermed eye.
Heide got a fried-baked Cod mix and went for the potato pancakes. I opted for fried Cod only and chose the mashed potatoes. With the meal will come sliced bread with nice crusty, crust. The cold slaw is sharp and crunchy. A special treat is the fried hush puppies. With meals, a beer,a red wine, and tip we got out of there for around 35 Bucks. The food came out to our table very quickly - so quick in fact, I forgot my old moose friend directly.
Moose Creek Bar and Grille is cool with Cool Dadio. Find them at North 4403 County Road H, Elkhorn, Wisconsin 53121. Call (262) 723 - 8844 for more information.
