Saint Patrick's Congregational School - Janesville - Friday Night Fish Fry

This entry was posted on 12/4/2009 3:42 AM and is filed under Church Dinners, Friday Night Fish Fry.

Down in the Old Forth Ward (primarily the current 16th voting ward) of Janesville is a well kept Friday fish fry secret.  I always try to skim through the Thursday "Kicks" entertainment section of the Janesville Gazette.  A year ago or so I noticed a little blurb in the Food & Drink column.  It mentioned a fish fry at Saint Patrick's Congregational School.  As I turns out they have a fish fry once a month throughout the winter months.  I have to admit, Heide and I have lived in Janesville the better part of 10 years and completely missed the get-together...altogether.

They don't toot their own horn too loud, so I was wondering what kind of a turn out there might be. The place is usually packed; They serve from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  They obviously rely on a good bit of word-of-mouth publicity.

It is buffet style; you'll grab a plate and tools, and go though serving up your own eats.  There will be at least three types of fried fish.  There is a good helping of cheesy hash browns, mashed potatoes, and French fries.  If you get there early, there is a crock pot of gravy.  There is of course, a big bowl of salad and cole slaw.  There will always be coffee and pink lemonade.  Off on a side table will be an assortment of homemade desserts.  The whole deal is all-you-can-eat.  Everything has a homemade, family gathering timbre.

The feast is in the basement of the school and there will be rows of group tables pushed together in a line; so, you will be eating with your fellow citizens.  Everyone is friendly and helpful.

The whole shebang, at the door price, will set you back 10 Bucks per person for everyone over 15 years old.  Ages six to 14 will cost six Bucks.  Advance tickets are one dollar off.  Age five and younger there is no charge.  Heide and I have been down there at least three times.

You will find Saint Patrick's Congregational School at 305 Lincoln Street, Janesville, Wisconsin.  It is just southwest of downtown Janesville, deep in the old neighborhood.  Call: (608)  752  -  2031 for more information.

    Dates for 2009:  September 11; October 9; November 13; December 11.

    Dates for 2010:  January 15; February 19; March 5; March 26; and April 23.

Sergeant Edinger suffered shrapnel wounds from a homemade bomb.   Edinger was a member of the 2nd Force Reconnaissance Company, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force.  The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel mentioned that this had been his second tour of duty in Iraq after taking part in the first wave of the war in March of 2003.
