Just some tavern burgers and a bit of rural legend
A random journey out to my old stomping grounds in the Whitewater area found Heide and I at The Cold Spring Inn in of course, Cold Spring. It is a village just north of Whitewater consisting of the consummate old stone foundation barns, a couple of houses, a church, a hillside cometary, and of course, the tavern eatery. A par three golf course has been added to the edge of town in the modern era. Minus the fairways, the village looks pretty much the way it looked 50 years ago.
An "unofficial" historical marker insists that a young soldier named Abraham Lincoln stopped in town after the Blackhawk war. The purveyors of the tale insist Lincoln's horse was stolen and he had to walk the 250 miles back to Illinois. The plaque remains up and is handed off from township administration term to term, decade after decade. My history professor at UW-Whitewater up the road became so obsessed with the apparent brazen claim that he did a bit of research and determined the Lincoln stolen-horse legend is 99-percent myth and one-percent wish.
The Cold Spring Inn is a long-time favorite eatery and tavern. There is a small restaurant attached. We ordered cheese burgers. They were big burgers considering we chose the small options off the burgers' list - Heide chose cheddar, I chose the consummate American - both orders came with chips. There is always a thoughtful salad bar for a couple Bucks extra - on our visit, it featured shrimp soup and rolls. In the amenity section of the salad bar they offered a pumpkin cracker spread. With burgers, salad bar, drinks, and tip we got out of there for 22 Bucks.
