Just some good burgers, mushrooms, and fries
The Aztalan Inn is across the street from the Aztalan museum which features prehistoric artifacts recovered from the surrounding area. The theme of the museum, Aztalan State Park, and the area is the history of the Aztalan people that lived there from around the years 900 to 1200. They were stockade and large-dirt-mound builders. What has fascinated educators, students, visitors, and locals for years, is the prevailing wisdom that the Aztalan culture quite possibly embraced cannibalism to some extent at some point in their history. Some human remains found in the ubiquitous artifact deposits suggest they might have been eaten by other people. But, the debate continues.
On a modern, more civilized culinary note, Heide and I veered off to the not-so-beaten-path to hunt burgers and fries. We both ordered cheese burgers; I opted for breaded mushrooms; Heide chose beer battered fries. Both the mushrooms and fries presentation were way above the taste and texture of the consummate tavern appetizers one often ends up with. I also tried a cup of chili. With meals, appetizers, chili, and adult beverage we got out of there for around 20 Bucks.
Our waitress gave us a bit of history about the bar. She also took a moment to promote their Friday night fish fry. I have put them on my short list for fish.
