Just a good place to watch the Packers or Bears and have a burger - short and sweet
You know you are near the state line of Wisconsin and Illinois when you sit at your bar table and there is a picture of Bret Favre on one wall and a picture of Mike Singletary on the other. You might be in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin - the perennial lake town and quasi-resort area - "the city Chicago built.
We were trying to get over to the annual Darien Corn Fest, but due my schizophrenic work schedule, we found ourselves there rather late in the day on Saturday. Next year I intend to remedy the work schedule and revisit the Corn Fest properly - I have vowed to quit my job by next summer. None-the-less, we headed a bit further east over to Lake Geneva - both Heide's and my old stomping grounds.
Champs Sports Bar and Grill is on the main drag in down town Lake Geneva. It is the consummate quasi- modern Wisconsin tavern. There are big picture windows to plant your self in and watch the many pilgrims that have made the weekend trip to the lake north of Chicago to take a break from "the city". In the back you will find a thoughtful beer garden with all the trimmings. Inside there is the reliable, regulation, permanent, and free basketball free-throw hoop. There will most likely always be a game on television involving a Wisconsin team and another game or two on other sets presenting a Chicago and/or Illinois team.
Heide ordered the 1/2 pound burger with provolone. I ordered a basket of fries for us to share. I opted for the steak sandwich with peppers, mozzarella cheese, and onions. Of course there is a pickle and cup of cole slaw per order.
With a couple of adult beverages and tip we got out of there for just under 30 Bucks. Champs Sports Bar and Grill is cool with Cool Dadio. If you get in a jam with where to go on a date due to changes in schedules, time constraints, or what ever, and need a reliable spot, keep Champs in mind. But then again, it is always worth a drive over to Lake Geneva at least once a year to watch the weekenders mingle with the locals. Find them at 747 West Main Street in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
