Black Hawk Tavern and Grill - Fort Atkinson - Friday Night Fish Fry

This entry was posted on 9/5/2008 11:42 PM and is filed under Taverns Wisconsin, Friday Night Fish Fry.

Just as you enter the Fort Atkinson downtown from the south on old Highway 12, you will find the Black Hawk Tavern and Grill to your left.  It sits on the corner in the building once known as the Black Hawk Hotel.  This is a place deserving of the Wisconsin-esque tavern category as well as today's interest - fish fry.

It is an eclectic place to say the least.  There are televisions set to sports in the modern sports bar theme.  The bar area is big and friendly in the spirit of the tavern.  The eatery has a hint of the old supper club timbre.  There are nooks by the many picture windows to have an intimate chat and wine.  The place is tastefully decorated and the staff wisp about and hover a bit invoking shades of the ever encroaching Bistro culture.  The tone is thoughtful yet bar-ish.  I am told the current owners have been there for over 10 years.

Heide tried the baked Mahi Mahi.  It was a welcome departure from the usual Friday offerings in the tavern world.  Lately she has been on a sweet potato fries vigil. I went for my consummate breaded Walleye.  I chose a baked potato for a change. For two Bucks extra, they have a small but thoughtful salad bar that offers four types of soup.  Heide got the chicken noodle and I the cheesy broccoli.   They have a tasty toasted marble rye bread that accompanies your meal.   The cole slaw was crunchy and fresh - it reminded me of the old fashioned recipes I ate as a kid.

Black Hawk Tavern and Grill is cool with Cool Dadio. Find them at 200 South Main Street in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin.  They start serving the fish up at 11:00 a.m. on Friday morning.  With tip and a couple beverages we got out of there for 30 Bucks. Call (920) 568  -  1898 for more information.
