Toby's Supper Club - Madison - Friday Night Fish Fry
This entry was posted on 8/15/2008 2:49 PM and is filed under Supper Clubs - Wisconsin-esque,Friday Night Fish Fry.
I have heard about and read about Toby's Supper Club in Madison. Heide and I have both lived and worked in the area at one time or another - but we never got to the well known eatery and tavern. This Friday night we took in Toby's with a couple friends.
Everybody got the three-piece deep fried Cod except Heide - she got the breaded Baby Pike. The Cod was of the less-crispy presentation, but it was excellent. I tried a bit of Heide's Pike and it reminded me of the way I often see Walleye prepared. It too was very good. Everyone in the party opted for the baked potato but I ordered up the hash browns. These hash browns are more of the Swiss fired potatoes one might hear about called Roesti. They usually come served on a separate plate prepared with cheese and butter, and served in a round almost pancake size presentation. Everyone got salads but me. I tried the cole slaw. It was crispy, yet creamy and smooth. It is right up there with some of the best slaw I have ever ate.
They have a unique style of queuing you up on the busy Friday nights. They take your name at the door, although they do not seem to write it down. Your whole party better be there or they won't take your name until they are. And one nuance Heide insists I mention is that they also take your order when they take your name. At some point your waitress comes by the bar, finds you, and then hustles your party to the waiting table.
The place was no doubt there long before that corner of southeast Madison was built up. It has a supper club dining area, yet with a big friendly bar in the middle. I am told they are always crowded. Toby's is cool with Cool Dadio. Wtih our meals, drink, and tip, Heide and I got out of there for just under 30 Bucks.
Find Toby's Supper Club at 3717 South Dutch Mill Road in Madison, Wisconsin. It is just south of the Beltline and just off Highway 51 (Stoughton Road). Call (608) 222 - 9613 or (608) 222 - 9954 for more information.
