The Stagecoach Inn - Fort Atkinson - Friday Night Fish Fry
This entry was posted on 7/25/2008 9:51 PM and is filed under Supper Clubs Wisconsin, Friday Night Fish Fry.
The Stagecoach Inn has been on Highway 26 between Fort Atkinson ("Fort" to the locals) and Milton for as long as I can remember. And as the crow flies across the corn fields and tamaracks, it can't be more than seven miles from where I grew up. And in Bob-esque fashion, I had never been there.
Heide and I had heard about their fish fry off and on. Tonight we finally got there. Our waitress mentioned there had been only three owners going back to the middle of the last century - pretty good for the restaurant business. The name of "Stagecoach" endured throughout the ownership changes. Another good sign is that a couple of the staff have been there for over 20 years. She also mentioned an old name I remember of an uncle of hers who farmed out where I grew up near the Lima Marsh. My dad had known the man. We were from the same township.
Heide tried the Perch. She said it was more heavily breaded than the usual Wisconsin serving. We both ordered the Au Gratin potatoes - quite a delicious presentation. I had the deep-fried Cod. It reminded me of the fish we use to prepare at the church fish frys. The meal came with rye bread and a cup of crispy cole slaw. We capped off the evening by sharing an order of homemade cheese cake with fresh cherries on top.
The Stagecoach Inn is cool with Cool Dadio. The fish, soda, and cheese cake ran about 25 dollars, and with the tip and we got out of there for just under 30 Bucks. Remember it is yet another establishment that is supper-club-esque so the prices are just a bit higher than the tavern presentation. But, they are right on par with their peers in the genre. Find them at 11946 Highway 26, between Fort Atkinson and Milton. Call (608) 868 - 3850 for more information.
