Mars Resort - Lake Geneva (Lake Como) - Friday Night Fish Fry
This entry was posted on 6/20/2008 1:54 PM and is filed under Supper Clubs - Wisconsin-esque,Taverns - Wisconsin-esque,Friday Night Fish Fry.
Back in Heide's old stomping grounds there is a place tucked back in the lake cottage neighborhoods on the south side of Lake Como. It is "the other lake" near Lake Geneva. Mars Resort is one of those places that is supper club esque but still has a lake-tavern timbre. Complete with shore-view patio, inside piano player, and old wood interior, Mars smacks of a lake culture many probably never ever new about or long since think is gone. There is a great view of the lake from the inside picture windows which have plenty of seating along them.
You will find more of a supper club menu, so along with that comes the almost-supper club prices. But, Mars is worth the trek to the lake country of Walworth County. I had all-you-can-eat Haddock for $9.95 and Heide tried the fried Blue Gills for $11.95. The Gills were lightly breaded and not-to fishy. My Haddock was breaded with a much lighter coating than most fish frys. The lighter breading departure was welcome for a change. Heide got the potato pancakes which did indeed taste like the real tavern version our grandmothers used to make. I ordered the potato fritters. I love fritters if you can find them. Mars' fritters are good and deep fried. People tell me they are hard to make if done right. These fritters hit the spot.
Mars Resort is cool with Cool Dadio. With all the fix'ns and tip we got out of there for 32 Bucks. Take a ride out to Mars, you should not be disappointed. Find them on W4098 South Shore Drive on Lake Como off Highway 50.

Wisconsin military service person of the week
This week's Wisconsin soldier to remember is Second Lieutenant Jeremy L. Wolfe, 27, of Menomonie. Wolfe was killed in the U.S. military's worst single loss of life at that stage of the war since the Iraqi war began. Seventeen 101st Airborne Division soldiers, including Wolfe, died Saturday night November 15, 2003 when two helicopters collided and crashed in the northern city of Mosul. The UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters were from the 101st Airborne Division. Jeremy was attached to the 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. This was the same crash that killed Army Sergeant Warren S. Hansen, 36 of Clintonville and Army Specialist Eugene A. Uhl III, 21, of Amherst who were Daily Dadio's honored Wisconsin soldiers in the previous two weeks. Lieutenant Jeremy L. Wolfe became Wisconsin's eighth military service person to die in Iraq.
