The first thing I notice when I walk up the steps to the Glarner Stube restaurant and tavern in New Glarus, Wisconsin in the summer is a splash of flowers cascading from the window box. They draw your glance up to the back drop of a rural 19th Century building facade. I have always loved this restaurant. I found it in 1977. I had returned home after three years in the Army in Germany.

"Why don't you ride over to New Glarus if you miss German food so much," my mom said. So...I did. Thirty-one years later I still make the occasional journey that way and the relationship endures. Last Friday was no exception. New Glarus is of Swiss heritage, but German Wiener Schnitzel and American steak offerings are on the menu. The bar is "Old Wisconsin" and always comfortable. The bar and small restaurant area both have wood floors lending to the ambiance of the dining experience.

As fate would have it, here at the Glarner Stube 28 years ago, Heide and I had our first official date. Current owners Debbie Anderegg and Gary Westby have operated the place since 1991. It is the one place for almost 30 years we always recommend to friends and visiting family for a guaranteed good meal.

The deep fried or baked Cod will run you around 12 Dollars. They offer fried Perch or Shrimp for 16 Dollars. Although the Friday night fish is some of the best I have ever had, it is the extras that go one step beyond. They offer Swiss fired potatoes called Roesti for a couple Bucks extra. Also there is a roasted mashed potato option. Both options are in the finer dining category - we are not talking hash browns here. The cole slaw and Swiss vegetable soup begs of home-made.

Do not be fooled by the small restaurant and tavern-esque timbre of the place - the food is extraordinary. The price is slightly higher than tavern fish but the presentation is right out of a "fancy restaurant" category. It is a great place to take friends. With tip and soda pop for the drinks we got out there for 35 Bucks.

The Glarner Stube is cool with Cool Dadio. You will not be disappointed. Take highway 69 south out of Verona or north out of Monroe. New Glarus is about 29 miles from Madison; and, about 17 miles from Monroe. The restaurant is in the village at 518 First Street. Be sure to call first as the Glarner Stube is very popular.
