Last Friday late afternoon Heide and I hopped in her sports car and sped out east of Janesville to The Richmond House for fish fry. The Richmond House has been operating out in the lake country as long as I can remember. They are one of those places that also offers a Wednesday fish fry as well. That usually means the place has a history with the fish culture. In their beer battered and broiled Cod categories they have a 2-piece for $6.95; a 3-piece for $7.95; and, a 5-piece for $9.50. Heide got the 2-piece beer battered and I got the hand battered Lake Perch for $10.95. The Perch's batter was crisp and the fish was tender. Heide concurred on the Cod.
Their cold slaw has a crisp texture as if someone put some time in its preparation. Heide tried the potato pancakes and I chose the al gratin potatoes. Neither of us had anything left on our plates after we finished. We got there right at 4:00 p.m. when they started to serve. The place started to fill up pretty quick. That's an indication of their reputation. The bar is a great visit into the Wisconsin lake country tavern culture.
The Richmond House is cool with Cool Dadio. They are out by themselves on Highway 89. You can take County Road A out of Janesville or Elkhorn to connect with Hwy 89. They are maybe about 10 miles south of Whitewater in Hwy 89. Give them a try, you should not be disappointed. Call (608) 883-2140 to get more details on other food and times.
